Associate professor of anthropology at Montclair State University, has conducted long-term research in Vieques, Puerto Rico. An innovative educator and scholar, she has created, organized, and led summer field schools in Guadalajara, Mexico and Vicos, Peru, in addition to service learning trips to New Orleans, LA and Ecovillage Ithaca, NY. A former director of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program at Montclair State, she has served in numerous leadership roles in the Latin American Studies Association, including Chair of the Environmental Section. She is the author of "Military Power and Popular Protest: the U.S. Navy in Vieques, Puerto Rico", numerous academic articles and book chapters, and was a founding editor of "Anthropology Now" magazine which she lead for seven years. In addition to her academic work, Dr. McCaffrey has been a visible public scholar, and was invited to speak at the White House before the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico.
