¿Y si decimos no?

To Ángela Figueroa Sorrentini and Michelle R. Koerner, for reasons they know.
To the adjunct faculty of my country, a most adjunct of countries.
It is possible to make poetry with numbers. I have been informed: the matter amounts to roughly 75% within the “university in ruins.” Poetry is also made with words. This is a tautology, but it must be declared, since the market takes words over… as well. For example, “excellence,” “quality,” “success,” “innovation.”
The excellent quality
that an innovative education
promises
for the success of young people
is the reverse
of the 75%,
referred to as,
—what a beautiful name!—
“precarious labor.”
Right… surely, that is not poetry, not by a long shot, but in the hands of poets
–which are not mine– every word has potential.
This is not a paper.
Nor is it keywords. Or networking. Or convention of the profession. Or swelling CVs for inexistent tenure track positions. Or knowledge one “works on.” Or sprinkling fashionable names here and there. Or, for that matter, transforming any names in fashionable ones. Or saying nothing in 5,000 words. Or writing with a leftist timbre exclusively for readers with a leftist timbre who, with lots of luck, will read you and then congratulate you for your leftist timbre, and all of this happening in a journal with a leftist timbre, whose internet hits are increased by means of unfathomable databases that auto-control themselves, or so it seems, while conveniently leaving behind loads of money. And the money is not for you, of course.
Nor is this a parade of hypocritical smiles, with or without hors d’oeauvres, where intimacy, an encounter, thought, vulnerability will never find shelter.
What it is, perhaps, is a matter of life and death.

I’ve seen myself doing some of the above. I do not write this with the arrogance of the exempt. I recognize the atrocious power we confront; a power like the sea, offering water to legions of shipwrecked, who immediately discover they cannot drink it.
What if we let ourselves die? What if we say no? What if we proclaim to the market: you do not decide for me; I shall not drink from your water? What if we snatch an excellent opportunity from the colossal lie that today’s “job market” is, and we think and say what we truly believe, what is truly excellent, of quality? Maybe because we are courageous, but, actually, because of something much more elemental: the undisputable certainty that we will die. We will not do so with dignity, however, if we do not say that which breaks open our flesh, if we do not study that which has opened the flesh of others, rather than keywords and headlines. Besides, in terms of what we can foresee today, there will be no “job security,” with or without our courage. And even if –magic wand!–, there is, is it desirable on condition that we keep silent? What name in art, literature, history, philosophy, has ever been worth it who has not thought and said that which was forbidden, that which could not be kept in silence, that which opened her flesh; that is, that which is of an excellent and innovative quality?
Certainly, this is not a paper.
